Teenage Addictions

Our society has totally messed up the way family is to view teenage addictions. Our society says that we live in a place where teenagers will be teenagers. They will probably mess up but eventually they will come around. While for many people who have parents that pray for them and make true attempts to lead them in the right direction, the kids probably will eventually wake up to the teaching that their parents have instilled into them. However, there are literally thousands of teenagers who suffer from addictions of all sorts and those addictions lead on to being lifelong addictions.

One of the biggest and most staggering statistics that I have found is that when you look at alcoholism and drug abuse in adults, there is a glaring problem here. According to those that suffer from adult addictions of these problems 47% of them say that their addictions began before the age of 21. Just as mentioned above, teenage addiction often will lead to adult additions. Since our society tells us that they will grow out of their problems, we do not always address them as we should.

The fact of the matter is that we live in a time where sex, drugs, and alcohol are literally all around us. We are unable to protect our children directly from seeing these things. They are on television, they are in games, they are in the music, and even the cleanest of shows and music will often have some innuendoes in it. I personally do not believe that you have to shelter a child to lead them in the right manner. Obviously, protection and boundaries are almost always good. But you can overdo it at times. This exposure and too much of it can lead to them seeing social acceptance of those types of behavior.

I am extremely thankful that I had a mother and father that prayed for my soul. I was a struggling teenager, often experimenting with things that I shouldn’t be. The good news is that Romans 3 paints a clear picture of how everyone struggles with sin and problems in their life. The good news is that Jesus Christ died on the cross for us. I believe that Romans 12:2 says it best in the sense that our mind is renewed and through the power of Jesus Christ we can turn from a pattern of sin that the world says is normal or accepting of.
