Internet Addiction Can Run Up The Bill

Dan has been telling me how he has been “running up the bill” with his almost 6 hours daily of Internet use. I’m like thinking “6 hours”, wow, that’s like a quarter of your day. I mean its one think if you do work from the computer, but web surfing for 6 hours could be a little extreme.

What makes matters worse is that he starts “buying” things from the computer a few times a week, and it seems like he developed a “shopping habit” where he says he feels like he has to buy something online.

Be careful with the Internet…it’s a silent type of addiction that can creep up on you before you know it. Next thing you know you are bound to the box so to speak. I had some guys in a group who were struggling with an Internet pornography addiction..not to get into it in detail, but they were on some porn websites that were charging them money….and they were actually running up a tab as well….one guy was spending about $300 a month…ouch!

Try to channel your energy elsewhere when you feel “compelled” to pick up the laptop, or other type of computer. If you feel that it is a battle to watch television, read a book, or even talk with your friends or family because of the web…it just might have drawn you into its “web”, and now its tough to get out.

Say a quick prayer…”OK God, here we go again on this Internet binge…help give me some strength here to find something else to do”….hey grab the bible, and read a few verses..then go back to the Web…do it little by little…surf the web….pick up the bible and read a verse….then go back to the web…then pick up the bible and read more verses….after time you will see the amount of time decreasing on the web….and hey, you just might pick up some pointers while you are reading…
